ReplyDeletePeary made his first expedition to the Arctic in 1886, intending to cross Greenland by dog sled, taking the first of his own suggested paths. He was given six months' leave from the Navy, and he received $500 from his mother to book passage north and buy supplies. He sailed on a whaler to Greenland, arriving in Godhavn on June 6, 1886.[4] Peary wanted to make a solo trek but a young Danish official named Christian Maigaard convinced him he would die if he went out alone. Maigaard and Peary set off together and traveled nearly 100 miles (160 km) due east before turning back because they were short on food. This was the second-farthest penetration of Greenland's ice sheet at that date. Peary returned home knowing more of what was required for long-distance ice trekking.[5]

Robert Edwin Peary born in Cresson, Pennsylvania, on May 6, 1856, in 1881, he joined the U.S. Navy Civil Engineers Corps. Three years later, he began his career in exploration as assistant on a expedition to Nicaragua. Soon, he became obsessed with the idea of reaching the North Pole. Robert try to reach the Pole in 1893. Two more expeditions followed one, 1898-1902 and the other one 1905-1906. Robert E. Peary went to the north pole in 1909, that expedition was to be the last try.
ReplyDeleteHis claim also ran into trouble. An act of the Congres recognized his claim, but this
was a political accolade. Robert died in 1920, and the dispute of his claim of being
the first reach to the North Pole continues today.

ReplyDeleteWe read a book last year regarding this topic. As far as I remember, Robert E. Peary made several expeditions to the North Pole with one associate: Matthew Alexander Henson. I found interesting that although it is not clear whether or not Robert E. Peary was the first one to get to the North Pole, it is certain that his partner, Mattew Alexander Henson was the first black explorer to get there.
ReplyDeleteGood! I like that you remember about that book

I find it interesting that some polar historians do not believe that Robert Peary really reached the North Pole. They say he may have been very close, but made a mistake thinking he reached the North Pole. Other historians think that he intentionally lied and knew he never reached the North Pole.

Robert Peary was the one who claimed to have reached the North pole after 23 years of exploration. Dr. F. Cook claimed to have reached it a year before, but it was proved that Peary got to the North pole and Cook didn't. His exploration journeys were with Matthew Henson. He started his expeditions on 1886.

ReplyDeletePeary was an American explorer who said he have reached the North Pole with his expedition on April 6, 1909. Peary's claim was widely credited for most of the 20th century, rather than the competing claim by Frederick Cook, who said he got there a year earlier. Both claims were widely debated in newspapers until 1913.

Robert e. Peary was born in Pennsylvania on may 6 1856. He graduated with the degree of Civil Engineer, he was the second place in his class. He worked as a Civil Engineer in the Naval he had the rank of Lieutenant on 1881, he was promoted to Liutenant Commander on 1901 and to Commander on 1902.
ReplyDeleteHe explored Greenland by dog sled in 1886 and 1891, finding evidence that it was an island. After announcing his intention to reach the North Pole, he made several attempts between 1898 and 1905, sailing on a specially built ship and sledding to within 175 miles of the pole. On April 6, 1909, accompanied by Matthew Henson and four Eskimo, he reached what he thought was the pole, and he became widely acknowledged as the first explorer to attain that goal. The claim of his former colleague Frederick A. Cook to have reached the pole in 1908 was later discredited. In 1911 Peary retired from the navy with the rank of rear admiral.
